This paper combs and examines the seldom studied local chronicles in Manchukuo period, and demonstrates Manchukuo's failed attempts to construct "national" identity through compiling local chronicles. The paper is consisted of two parts.Section I describes the compiling of the local chronicles in Manchukuo.First the author defines and counts the local chronicles. Second the author analyses the causes of compiling local chronicles on a large scale. Third the author studies the compilation organization from system, staff and funding. Finally by comparing research the author finds that local chronicles in Manchukuo inherited characteristics of local chronicles in the Republic of China, also had a distinct brand of Japanese colonial occupancy.Section II discusses the attempts of Manchukuo to construct "national" identity by compiling local chronicles, but this culture construction was unsuccessful.Because local chronicles could not build the national identity on "Manchurian" and the geographical identity on "Manchuria".
