This thesis is about the monographic study of modern Chinese words in everyday use, such as"lowness"and"shortness"and words like these in the vocabulary system. It studies on the concepts concerning"lowness"and"shortness"in modern Chinese use by the basic descriptive rule of combination of synchroneity and diachroneity, absorbing the relative achievements on modern linguistics, semantics and cognitive linguistics, choosing model literary works as language materials to inspect the distribution of these concepts in vocabulary system, describe the historical development and explore the relationship among every element in this system, thus to reconstruct the properties of this vocabulary system.The thesis can be divided into three parts: introduction, body and conclusion, five chapters in all. Chapter one is the introduction, which describes the present situation of Chinese vocabulary studies and the meaning of researches on common words'evolvement, indicates the idea of topic selection and study, points out that the core contents are to describe the signified looks of words like"lowness"and"shortness"and to explore the evolvements in historical periods. Chapter two mainly introduces the study materials and approaches of this thesis. Chapter three analyzes the signified looks of modern Chinese linguistics in different historical periods, considering that the relation of"lowness"and"shortness"in this vocabulary system is competitive and complementary, finding the distribution of the two in five signified fields by comparison. Chapter four explores the diachronic evolvement of signified situations of"lowness"and"shortness"by dividing history into six periods from Pre-Qin days to Qing dynasty. Chapter five makes the conclusions of signified looks, systematic properties and diachronic evolvement of"lowness"and"shortness"in modern Chinese by detailed study of language data.
