Ian McEwan who is the well known writer in England. At the same time he is seen as one of the most infuluence . His book has ranked first on sales volume. At the same time ,although he is only 51 years old , he have earned him worldwide critical acclaim.In Ian McEwan's books he always talk about the child ,which as the the leading character. Not like the traditional writers of England who wrote the child all life history, and have a changeless pattern。The novel of Ian McEwan is different from them. He has his own the modern times' style. Of couse, there are also some traditional things in his novels. From his four novels : Atonement , The Cement Garden, On Chesil Beach, The Child in Time , we analyze the theme of Growth.The research of Ian McEwan has just started, we have about 11 research Papers about this writer and his books. However, as yet no study of this monograph writers. Study in the UK about this writer and his works have a dozen monographs. In the United States, Russia, Japan and other countries on the works of this writer also have many monographs. I chose the theme of growth in Ian McEwan novels first of all because I think that in today's society in the background of general concerned about the quality of education, the study about the theme of growth of its social significance meaning. Second, from the further study on his style and characteristics, so that the domestic readers can better understanding this good writer. The third is a systematic study of the theme of writers has great significance meaning for in-depth study of this write.My thesis mainly uses the method of careful reading, then analyzes the theme of his novels. At the same time, chapters I and II used prototype criticism theory. In Chapter III use narrative theory analyzed McEwan's novel and unique narrative technique. The use of these methods are in order to better analyzed the theme of growth in his novels.the first part of this thesis analyzes the concept of growing up. and then through the prototype experience divided the process of character in McEwan's novels divided into three parts: The pain of growth, Refuse to grow up and Fly soul. This is McEwan's novels the main characteristics.The second part of the thesis analyzes "epiphany" "Lack of guidance" through theoretical analysis of the characters in the McEwan novels. "Lack of guidance " is a very important feature in his novels, have a lot of difference from other traditional novels.The last part of through narrative theory analyzed the narrative technique in McEwan's novels.The use of narrative technique for the growth has unique significance meaning.
