Hsiung-nu was a huge confederation of nomadic tribes which mixed many different tribes in Mongolia appeared in the 3 century BC. It's a little complicated in talking about their ethnic origin, ethnic composition, and society inner relations, etc. Leading by the first Baatur Toumen, the Hsiung-nu confederation rose rapidly from the Yin Mountains and Hetao Plains in the history. In 209 BC, the first ethnic state power in ancient China, Dulo dynasty, was build up by Baatur Mao-Tun after conquering many other nationalities around its. When the power went to debilitating, northern Hsiung-nu began its migration to the west and this action has resulted in the collapse of Roman Empire. The study on Hsiung-nu is booming when the great affect on the history of not only China but the world by Hsiung-nu attracts more and more scholars to study on.In the over 300 hundred years when Hsiung-nu was in the great desert, it created the initial polity, economics and cultures of nomadic nation in the Chinese history. It contacted closely or even warred with the other state powers around. Its cultures widely distributed into the Mongolia, Tran Baikal, Tuva area, Kazakhstan, Xinjiang, and the middle reaches of the Yellow River in northern China. Yin Mountains and Hetao Plains are the initial activity region of Hsiung-nu. It was controlled by Hsiung-nu Empire before the medium-term of Western Han Dynasty. After the medium-term of Western Han Dynasty, this area became a main point for settling down the submission of the Hsiung-nu people. When the history went into the Eastern Han Dynasty, the upper reaches of the Yellow River became a pasture of the South Hsiung-nu. In one word, the vicissitude of Hsiung-nu was all happened in the Yin Mountains and Hetao Plains.Since the early 1970's, there were many rock arts found in the Yin Mountains, Helan Mountain and Ulanqab Grassland by the archaeologists. Most of the contents of those rock arts are all about nomadic life or hunting. It has become well-known soon for its numerous quantity and concentration of many. Hsiung-nu people leaved many rock arts there. Although how much rock arts are belong to Hsiung-nu people in this area is still in question, the scholars can make out which one is made by them through comparing to the plastic arts such as tiger, deer or sheep in the gold, silver and copper vessels found from the Hsiung-nu relics. But they need deeper demonstration and re-analysis at the present for its deficient argumentation in my opinion. In this thesis, I would like to do a research using typology to compare the animal rock arts to the already identified ones, and the result what I am going to aim to is to select the Hsiung-nu style from them. At the same time, the conception of so-called 'Scythia-Hsiung-nu' will be discussed further. The similarity of animal rock arts between Ordos bronze animal pattern and Scythia wild-animal style are all called 'Scythia-Hsiung-nu' should need further discussion also.
