Yang Shi Xiang In Shandong (1905-1907)

YANG Shi-xiang is one of commanders of border-provinces in late Qing dynasty , this article is going to study and inquire into the problems that YANG Shi-xiang developed cultural and educational undertakings , promoted economic reform , paid close attention to social problem , renovated system of administrative control , trained troop and raised funds , had diplomacy with Germany in Shandong , as well as its effect in mordern history . This thesis includes five charpters in all . The first charpter discusses the important problems of the development of the press as a profession , edition of Shandong general annals , energetical initiation of schools , advocation and establishment of the chief educational research society , promotion of movment of study abroad , foundation of school of political science and law of Shangdong , agricultural and forestry college of Shandong , and so on , iniciated by YANG Shi-xiang , embodying the feelings of his attachment the importance to culture and education . The second charpter centres on those important economic activities that YANG Shi-xiang developed vigorously agriculture and mulberry , set up modern industrial and mining enterprises , opened non-treaty ports , thought highly of the constuction of communication and transporation indurstry , etc. , trying finding out achievement on economic construction which YANG Shi-xiang acquired in Shandong . The third charpter deliberates the thought and practice that YANG Shi-xiang run the evil of banditrty , river disaster , relieved the refugees , banned on opium , and abolished corrupt customs , &c. social problem in Shandong . The fourth charpter inspects the administative mechanism , tax system , and reform on minitary aspects made by YANG Shi-xiang , emphasized the explanation of the achievements of his political and military reform . The fifth charpter revolves around the historical facts that YANG Shi-xiang made diplomacy with Germany , forced Germany to withdraw its troops from Jiaozhou and Gaomi , finally , achieved great diplomatic success , and carried out commentary on it , disclosing the outstanding diplomatic abilities of YANG Shi-xiang .
