During the late modernism period, the traditional realism which had been lasted for more than five years seemed to an end in western world.E·H·Gombrich,a well-known British modern expert of art history stated in his book The Story of Art that one of the main traits of the western advanced arts in the 20th century was that it focused on experiment.Different schools followed suit and painted freely with as many materials, ideas and methods as possible. It basically finished the experimental period of the frame painting. For a while, some theoreticians and artists felt that painting would lose its vitality and come to and end. However, the art development of human society has its own pattern to exist and change. In terms of art history, each art format would come back to the start when it goes too far.As the oldest molding activity, painting has experienced a long history with social development from the old time up to now. Therefore,it is hard to believe that painting would lose its value and meaning today.Actually, the so-called death of art is only a temporary art phenomenon. In modern time art has never vanished. When photography appeared,it was believed that painting would be taken place by photography,as well as movie and television. It was even believed that photography would be taken place by novel. Although painting experienced its crisis,it is still a focus in society in modern time during which it is welcome or attacked. It shows its powerful vitality in a pluralistic society. It may not have the power of the Renaissance, but it is one of the important ways that human beings express their feelings. This article is intended to illustrate and compare the traits of different ideas and vitality of paintings by the three masters who lived in different periods in the Europe art history.
