This paper elaborates on the various artistic means based on the fundamental images in Malle's documentaries, as well as the distinctive style and its influence to his over-all film production.The first part, introduction, depicts the methods and significance of this paper, giving an account of the current research on documentaries by Louis Malle in China and its problems.Chapter I gives a picture of Malle's 40-year film-making career as an editor and his connection with New Wave in France.Chapter II focuses on the general style of Malle's documentary, and it fusion with feature films and the worldwide film concept.Chapter III discusses the reason for Malle's practice on the concept of"Direct Film"and the method of"Radom Producing"as a"Viewer".Chapter IV describes Malle's expression of"Multi-perspectives"and"Metaphor"through the analysis and comparison of his works.The conclusion in the end summarizes the traits of Malle's documentary, among which the most distinctive one is his random and real record rather than definition. Despite of the deficiency on the intense social reflection, Malle's documentary still bears the double meanings on human nature and living status.
