A great many writers in the History of Mordern Chinese Literature began to write under the influence of foreign literature. Laoshe was one of them. In the 1920s, Laoshe started his writing career under the influence of British Literature. During the five years in England, he finished three novels Mr. Chang's Philosophy, Zhao Zi and Two Ma's. Though that was just a try in his literary career and had a long distance from the mainstream literature at that time, those novels laid solid foundation for his writings afterwards. The influence of British literature on him distinctly reflected in three novels from three aspects: Firstly, he adopted the concept of Western Europe realistic literature and developed his own literary concept. He preferred to write on true life while keeping his writings unique instead of making them for political use. Secondly, he selected subjects on common people. He wrote on daily trivial things of common people and reflected their soul through a cross-cultural perspective. Thirdly, Laoshe displayed the humor of British literature very incisively and vividly. He kept on developing new literary structures instead of just adopting one, and smartly used them in different works, which created a different artistic form from traditional Chinese novels.
