This thesis focuses on the German translation of Yu Hua's novel《许三观卖血记》(Xu Sanguan Mai Xue Ji) Der Mann, der sein Blut verkaufle, and conducts a case study in the area of translation criticism. It firstly presents an overlook of translation studies, and introduces two different kinds of translation theories, the prescriptive one and the descriptive one. This thesis chooses the framework of the skopostheory, which began to gain influence since the nineteen eighties,as the theoretical starting point. Concerning the great differences of cultural and historical background between Germany and China,it is really conspicuous, that there is no footnote in the German translation of Der Mann, der sein Blut verkaufte. This fact makes the phenomenon of "cultural default" to a great problem. This thesis thus investigates the translation strategies, which the translator followed. It is then discussed, whether these are the correct strategies to fulfill the translation purpose:the skopos adequacy is the highest principle according to the concept of the skopostheory. Finally, the research comes to the conclusion that the translation strategies of Mr. Ulrich Kautz, the translator of Der Mann, der sein Blut verkaufte, are justified and adequate to the translation purpose. The translation is written in a fluent and simple language and succeeds in reproducing the narrative style of the original.
