Reading, as the most important language skill, has been paid much attention in foreign language teaching and learning. With the deeper research on the process of reading, both reading theories and reading methods have been improved a lot. However, most college students still have a lot of problems when confronted wth questions conceerning the understanding of the whole test and the implied meaning. The author argues that cohesion, especially lexical cohesion, as an important feature of a test, contributes a great deal to reading comprehension. It can give cues to reading comprehension and also provide consttaints in reading process.Therefore, the current thesis is mainly adopted the results of Hoey's research, together with some Halliday's viewpoints. It will analyze different types of lexical cohesion in English texts as well as their functions. In order to make it more pertinent, all the examples will be taken from New Horizon College English. In the real practice , it mainly details the important roel of lexical cohesion from the following four aspects like vocabulary,sentence,paragragh and text .
