Master Shou-pei(1884—1955) was the 44th successor of the LinJiZong,and one of the most senior monks in the Republic of China.We are responsible to find a place for hin in the history of Buddhism.Shou-pei was the person who thought deeply,being talent and had noble character.Of course,he was the real great thinker at that time and stood shoulder to shoulder with the well-deserved monks whose names were Yinguang and Xingci.The thought of Shou-pei's mainly related to two aspects of the Confucianism and Buddhism,while the elucidation of moral principles of Buddhism was the core of his ideology. Shou-pei advocated the confluence of the Confucianism and the Buddhism, which included two sides such as the theory of human nature and the concept of good and evil,the main idea of KongZi and the Heart of saints.Shou-pei's idea was mainly based on Surangma-samadhi-sutra and Mahayana-sraddhot pada-sastra,which depended on the theory of tathagata-garbha.For Surangma-samadhi-sutra study, Shou-pei was quite new and theoretical.In his representative"The Interpritation of the Surangma-samadhi-sutra",he grasped the total character photo with"Yuantong Xianmi,Jubei Dunjian".He pionted out the difference between Xianjiao and Mijiao.He also emphasized that everything belongs to tathagata-garbha. At the same time,the relevant details about the Surangama-samadhi-sutra, such as seeking for heart and breaking the wrong , the equal enlightenment and the marvelous enlightenment and so on,he also made fascinating reading,not only logically,but also well foundedly.The Mahayana-sraddhot pada-sastra is the old translation of Vidya-Matra-Shastra.Shou-pei not only deeply believed in it,but also thought highly of it.As far as Shou-pei was concerned,the Mahayana-sraddhot pada-sastra was the original book for the Mahayana Buddhist.It is the most expensive crown in the world because it condenses the essence of Buddhism, makes simple but deep meaning as well.At the same time,Shou Pei thought that the ancient translation for Vidya-Matra-Shastra was more excellent than the new one in China,and pointed out that the old one should take the place of the new one in order to restore the true colors of the Vidya-Matra-Shastra.In addition,Shou-pei was a master too who had a certain degree of knowledge in handwriting,painting,poetry and his behaviour was quite worth mentioning and respecting."The study of Pei Shou"managed to extract the main ideas of Shou-pei's on the basis of grooming relevant information,and then highlighted his unique,profound thought through a horizontal,vertical comparison and analysis.And we should make appropriate assessment of Shoupei's thought and give him a reasonable position in the history so that the academy and the Buddhist can pay attention to Shou-pei and his contribution.
