The language shift refers to the people of a nation or a part of nation give up the mother tongue and divert to another language. Lanaguge shift is more or less a common phenomenon to many nations. Taking Palai village in fuxing town as the case, this thesis will discuss the rule and the characteristics of language shift.The whole text is divided into seven chapters: The first chapter is an introduction to reason of selecting topic, relative research tendency, main content of the thesis and research way. The second chapter is about the Buyi people and their language. This part aims to make a whole introduction to the Buyi society, the language family which Buyi belong to, the present of Buyi language. The communitte of Balai village and the languages there are also introdcuced in this part. Chapter 3, Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 are the main content of this thesis. Chapter 3 "The Buyi languge at Balai village".In this part, depend on exact statistical data, the author point out that because of deferent age, sex, educate, and deferent occasion there comes out deferent character of language using. Chapter 4 " The Balai language under the influence of Buyi language". Making a systemic structure analysis on Balai language which concentrate on glossary, pronunciation and grammar, the author find out how the Buyi language influence on Balai language. Chater 5 " An analysis on the reason why the Buyi people divert to Chinese".By doing research on history, reality, school education and language attitude, the author discuss series of aspects which cause the shift of Han language using, and points out that language attitude is the most important element one. Chapter 6 "extra conclusion" It is a continual thinking of language using at Balai village, even the whole Buyi area. Chapter 7 "Conclusion" It is a conclusion to the whole thesis.The author believes: 1.Actually, the Buyi people at Balai have diverted to use Han language. Buyi language is now a auxiliary tool in communiction. 2. The phenomenon of Buyi language shift in Balai belongs to partial diverts. Following are the reasons: long-term influence of Han culture, economic shift and light Buyi identity. The light identity of Buyi cause the attitude of "prefer Han", this attitude appears on the way of the Buyi people use languages at Balai, this attitude make people give up their mother tongue and shift to Han language. 3.The Balai language is in the circumstance surrounding by Buyi language. It causes a series of variation on pronunciation, glossary, and grammar. Among the three aspect which influenced by Buyi languge, glossary is the deepest one, then pronunciation and grammar. Plenty of Buyi loanwords is the character of Balai language. 4. Balai village is situated at the area which Buyi language are well maintained, yet the Balai people divert to use Han language. There must be a regular in this process. It is a typical topic to do research on this phenomenon. By doing research on languages using at Balai village, we can find out some characters of language using in Buyi area. Therefore, it can help us with understanding the complexity of language using in minority area. Further more, it can form an example and a reference to such projects of language reservation and language policy in minority area.
