Based on the Mongolion folklore, the opera the legend of a wooden carving, is created according to the western composing techniques of orthodox opera .It not only inherits the traditional opera style,but also embodies the typical style of mongolian music. It is an excellent combination of national character and epochal character and a marvelous joint of dramatic character and artistic character. It opens up a specialised trail for the development of Chinese national opera,especially that of the minotity opera.The significance of nationlized opera lies in the fact that our national opera should be develped according to traditional artistic form so as to meet the taste of modern public.This article decides the composer's intention of creating the opera The Legend of Wood Carving and the opera's artistic style from his life experience and his previous style of creating. The composer has combined the creating skills of the western opera with that of Mongolian traditional music well, thereby creating the national opera that has not only a national style but also a symphony style.This essay mainly studies from the brief introduction of contents, analysis of melody features, analysis of composition structures, applying of various composing skills and arrangement of orchestras. The melody of the legend of a wooden carving was revised according to the original music and the material of Mogolion folksongs.The composer expresses the original music and the folksong in the form of opera and represents Mogolion customs and feelings by using such techniques as aria and recitative in western opera. It mainly studies how the same music material can be used in different situations skillfully and perform different musical mood, It also studies how to use different folk song materials to portray different musical images, especially the sharp contrast of figures' characters caused by the variation of tune features. The study concerns various composing skills, for example, harmony, musical instrument, compound tune, tune types and Zhi Ti. The use of Mongolian Matouqin, Urtin Duu and Humai adds more national features.The legend of wooden carving has made a brave try in the reseach of nationlized opera and provides some new hints in the development of the diversified national opera. It also shows the essence of prairie culture from the detailed composing skills to the whole arrangement of styles and it successfully portrays the bright art images of Na La, Ba Teer, Man Deerwa and Ha Saer, etc.
