In current researches on ecological ethics, there has been a heated debate between anthropocentrism and non-anthropocentrism over whether humans must be the central concern in our value system or the natural world also has its rightful status besides being a resource to be exploited. This debate, in spite of its contribution to the in-depth discussion of the ethical relationship between man and nature and to the reflection over the transformation of nature by mankind, has made ecological ethics fall into dire straits due to the unconciliable nature of the differences between the two sides. Therefore, it has become one of our urgent and significant tasks to find a solution to the controversy and a means to help ecological ethics break through the bottleneck. The ancient Chinese confusion philosophy of "consummating oneself and the nature" is a noteworthy man-based approach to the value of ecological ethics. In its framework, "consummating oneself", "consummating other people" and "consummating the nature" share the same essence, because a morally good person who is kind to people is certainly able to live in harmony with all the beings in the universe. This idea, which provides a more reasonable perspective on the issue in question and a better way out of the limitations of both anthropocentrism and non-anthropocentrism, is of both theoretical and practical significanceThe traditional Confucian culture is a library abounding with thoughts and reflections over ecological ethics, on which the extensive researches by a number of scholars at home and abroad have been reciprocated with many enlightening achievements. Among all the literature, however, there has been very little concern over the significance of the aforementioned philosophy on contemporary studies of ecological ethics. The idea of "consummating oneself and the nature" is in fact of great value in the reconstruction of the philosophical basis of ecological ethics.
