Coen Brothers Film Studies

Coen Brothers' films are full of magical color and black style. Their different narrative techniques, exaggerated and distorted figures and unexpected plot setting have created a "charming world" of Coen. Therefore, their films have obvious style of "author". This paper is divided into three major parts: the first part has explained the intrinsic implication of Coen Brothers' films. In the films, the directors showed their great concern for the reality. As Jewish directors, Coen Brothers are very easy to be influenced by the existentialism. Therefore, the shadow of existentialism can be found in their works. The second part has analyzed the characters of Coen Brothers' films. Coen Brothers are known as "the cartoonist" in the movie circle. Many distinctive characters were shaped in their works. These figures have very bright characteristics. No matter how much performance the actors have in the films, they are very unforgettable to the audience. The third part has elaborated on the aesthetic style and the audio-visual language of Coen Brothers' films. By the use of satire and exaggerating way of black humor, the unique style of audio-visual language was displayed in their films. No matter whether or not Coen Brothers' films could become a new type of Hollywood, the alternative style and the originality of their works should not be overlooked in the history of the world film.
