We produce millions of images everyday in the world, but seldom do we think about the nature of photography, its uniqueness compared with other arts, what it represents, its use and status in daily life, and how it influences and changes our aesthetics and the way people feel. Such questions, encountered by every modern person who has once seen images, unconsciously influence our daily life as well as our thinking. It is meaningful to analyze the aesthetics and contemporary value of photography as a visual art, for it makes us understand photography as an art which has the widest and most far-reaching influence upon contemporary social life. This thesis starts with the question of how to understand the aesthetic meaning of photography. From the representative function of photography as a representative art, this thesis argues that apart from the formal functions such as objective recording, mechanical copy and convenience, photography is representative in image reproduction, such as mantage, viewpoint choosing, subjective emotions and so on. For various subjective factors, its truth representation has been doubted about. It’s true that separated representation and manifestation by traditional elite art cannot be successful or interpret photography, so Susan lundgren redefines art as "the creation of emotional signs", maintaining the advantages of both the definition of representation and manifestation.Photogrophy is a visual art of representing images and different from representative painting and novels. We compare it with the two and thus makes its unique function, nay representation and manifestation intertwined together. Such function makes photography doubtful:does it objectively represent truth? Is such representation saturated with subjective emotion? Because of its subjective factors, especially viewpoints and montage, the truth in photography is hard to be understood.Photographic images greatly influences the way people perceive, think and live while it satisfies their visuals. It not only shows artistic truth, but also has aesthetic meaning, so in the context of the era of image, Susan lundgrens interpretation that photography is "the creation of humans emotional signs" is more appropriate.
