On Appellations Of Gender Discrimination

Language, as one of the social and cultural phenomena, is closely related to social structure, social values and social behavior. Language functions as the major means of human communication and supports human ideology, therefore, It is a direct reflection of social customs and human values. Language is created for all human beings, but as two different genders, males and females, language is used and applied variously because of sexual discrimination. Appellation is one of the most important parts of language word systems and reflects sexual discrimination, which is closely connected with the communication and life of people. Both Chinese and English appellation systems exist the phenomenon of discrimination against women, but the extent of discrimination against women are different because of the differences of language and culture.The body of the thesis is divided into three parts.The first part discussed the performance of the sexual discrimination of appellation, mainly from three aspects discussed. Firstly, looking from kin term, both Chinese and English appellation systems exist the sexual discrimination. Secondly, looking from social appellation, Although great changes have taken place in social appellation especially in the appellation of female, the feudal culture's influence can not eliminate in a short time, the social appellation still exists sexual discrimination. Thirdly, looking from full name appellation, it reflects the connotation of national culture, and people's value idea, when naming people input own subjective desire and social manner into it. The full name appellation also has sexual discrimination phenomenon.The second part discussed the reason for sexual discrimination of appellation, mainly from the social division of labor, power, role, cognitive model, myths and legends, the Confucian culture and so on.The third part is the thoughts of sexual discrimination, on the one hand, the existence of sexual discrimination caused cognitive impairment; on the other hand, the existence of sexual discrimination affected the construction of a harmonious society; At last, we should strive to eliminate such discrimination and roots.Sexual discrimination is embodied in the form of language, but it is rooted in society and culture. This thesis aims to make it clear that it is not an isolated language phenomenon, which can not be fully understood if broken away from the social and cultural background. And it is the concrete reflection of the traditional thought of "male superiority to female" in language and it can be eliminated with the prerequisite of the elimination of feudal ideals. The change of language is limited by social culture. It changes with the change of social culture.
