Self-handicapping strategies is any action or choice of performance setting that enhances the opportunity to externalize (or excuse) failure and internalize (reasonably accept credit for) success. The foreign country's researches on it have achieved great success, however, researchers in our country began to refer to self-handicapping from 2003, and there are few correlation researches in this domain.University school is a typical performance setting. College students are confronted with more pressure from studying and seeking for employment. This research studies college students' self-handicapping behaviors, and focuses on four questions in the way of inventory. The first, we want to know the characteristics of self-handicapping for the university students. The second, we aim to find out the relation between self-discrepancies and self-handicapping. The third, we explore the relation between self-handicapping and personality traits. And the last, we study the weightiness of every factor that can influence self-handicapping. The conclusions are as follows:1. There is no mutual effect between gender and other independent variables (grade, sex, major) in self-handicapping in college students. There is no remarkable gender and grade difference in self-handicapping in college students, while there are significant differences between the students that are of different majors and the students from the city and country. Art students have higher scores on self-handicapping than science students; the urban students have higher scores than the students from the country.2. The correlation analyse suggests that except the dimensionality of interpersonal relation self-discrepancy of OA (ought-actual self-discrepancies), other dimensionalities of OA and IA (ideal-actual self-discrepancies) are positively correlated with self-handicapping significantly; and that the degree of self-discrepancies has significantly positive effect on self-handicapping. The regression analyses indicate that only IA ability self-discrepancy has significant effect on self-handicapping.3. Emotionality of personality traits is positively related with self-handicapping significantly, while extraversion, behavioral style, ability, interpersonal relation, living attitude predicts self-handicapping negatively.4. The dominance analyse shows that, among the predictive variables of this research, the most important predictive variable is extraversion, the second is IA ability self- discrepancy, the third is behavioral style.
