Coherence is always one of the important subjects in discourse analysis. Therefore, many scholars attempt to study coherence from the different perspectives. Some scholars try to analyze it from the static research method. However, this static approach cannot account persuasively for the coherence in the spoken discourse which lacks of cohesive mechanism and implicit coherence. In fact the spoken discourse is produced by language use, i.e. it cannot do without the interaction between the speaker and the hearer. In order to obtain the whole image of coherence, it is necessary to employ a dynamic analysis through pragmatics and cognition, especially in the spoken discourse. As we all know, the spoken discourse is a dynamic process featuring in the nature of changing. Thus the coherence of the spoken discourse will be affected by the context and the thinking patterns of the interlocutors. And then we will study some spoken discourses from cognitive context, thus obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the coherence of the spoken discourse. The study is mainly divided into six parts. The first part is the introduction. The research background and the purpose of the thesis are introduced. The second part intends to make a general study of discourse, the spoken discourse and coherence. The third part is devoted to the theoretical study of the relationship among the spoken discourse, context and cognitive context. The fourth part is the theoretical study on the construction of cognitive context. The fifth part is based on the cognitive context to explain the coherence. The sixth part is the conclusion. It concludes that during the process of spoken discourse, the employment of the cognitive context can help a lot to make people have a better understanding of the spoken discourse and achieve the aim of communication.
