In the call of "Self-strengthening" Yan Fu left Houguan, Fujian. He went upon the historical stage in advocating the Western Culture and new knowledge for "National Salvation". After graduating in the United Kingdom he came back and served in the North Ocean Navy, looking forward to do something useful. But during the era of chaos he became depressed, for his dream could not come ture. Stimulated by Tsing Dynasty's defeat in the 1894 Battle, Yan Fu became radical. To some extent he began to advocate reform, published articles in National News, and kept in touch with the "Reformers" who had the similar dream like him. He attempted to change people's characteristic by means of translating and publishing Western books. After "Darwinism" being translated and published the Chinese people was inmediately inspired, and the thoughts of revolution enjoyed popular support. As a result, the Chinese who had always been conservative started to accept new thoughts. But after the Reform Movement of 1898 and the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, in the face of domestic more and more radical ideological trend, Yan Fu began to reflect on his thoughts which he had advocated before, and re-examined the West and its culture.Eventually he gave up his approaching to the Western Culture and returned to sinology.
