Four-syllable new words and expressions are the words or expressions which consist of four syllables in modern Chinese. From the eighties of last century, along with the development of the society, there appeared a great lot new words and expressions. And one of the most obvious characteristics of new words and expressions is that the ratio of four-syllable new words and expressions has greatly increased.This thesis takes the foremost 1185 four-syllable new words and expressions (which initials are from A to N) in the Dictionary of Modern Chinese New Words and Expressions (edited by Lin Zhiwei and published by the company of Business Publisher in 2005 ) as studied objects and has discussed their primary characteristic in the aspects of creation methods and internal configuration.In this thesis, the writer also tried to distinguish four-syllable new words and four-syllable new expressions with the theory of synthesized morpheme brought forward by Ge Benyi.In the last, the writer has analyzed the causes for the boom of four-syllable new words and expressions.
