Mulanshi is an exotic flower among the garden of Chinese classical literature. Its unique artistic charm calls the generations' receivers in order to form the brilliant reception history of thousand years. Previously researchers focused on the research of the writing age, words, sentences and the source materials of the poem, or the inquiry of the artistic characteristics and ideological contents of the poem. Although these studies have made fruitful results, they are lack of diachronic and a dynamic analysis. Consequently, this paper will study the spread and reception of Mulanshi before Ming Dynasty using the theoretical method of the receptive aesthetics, based on historical documents and starting from readers, in order to reveal the impact and reason of Mulanshi on the readers and literary creation.Introduction firstly introduces the production and development process of receptive aesthetics, which is the theoretical basis of Mulanshi study on reception history. Secondly, this part summarizes the research results of Mulanshi and Points out the weakness of Mulanshi study that is the excessive emphasis on a static, simultaneous analysis, and the lack of a diachronic and dynamic analysis. Finally, it explores the importance of Mulanshi study on reception history.There are four parts in the text:The first chapter discussed the custom of the times and the writing reception of Mulanshi. There are many different viewpoints on the creative era of Mulanshi, but the study of Mulanshi reception history has to determine its writing time. So this chapter firstly describes the rationality of Mulanshi appearing in the Northern Dynasties from document materials, the custom of the times and poetry language. Secondly, the author mainly studies the writing reception of Mulanshi, as the reception process of Mulanshi began in the Northern Dynasties.In the second chapter, the author mainly inspects Mulanshi preliminary reception in Tang Dynasty. It showed the thriving scene in this period. Not only Mulanshi was received by some of poems, prose and novels, but also the stories of Mulan extensively spread in the folk. The chapter focuses on: 1,Mulange, imitation of Weiyuanfu; 2,The Mulanshi reception of Libai and Dufu; 3,The praise which poets of Tang Dynasty showed for the image of Mulan; 4,The impact of Mulanshi on Frontier Poems of Tang Dynasty.The third chapter is Mulanshi reception and spread in Song Dynasty. Song Dynasty was the high tides of Mulanshi reception. The main spread ways of Mulanshi had: the text dissemination on the support of books; the critical dissemination by the main criticisms; the folk transmission by the main general people. Mulanshi reception in Song Dynasty also appeared to the distinctive characteristics of the times, specifically in the following ways: anthologists'identification and the increase of the anthologies, the critics rationally explored the origin of the poems and summarized the art experience. The chapter focuses on:1,The reception and dissemination of Mulanshi in Song Dynasty from anthologies; 2,The artistic evaluation on Mulanshi; 3,Poets in Song Dynasty unanimously praised Mulan; 4,Historical study of Mulanshi.In final chapter, the author demonstrates Mulanshi reception in Jin and Yuan Dynasty. Jin and Yuan Dynasty is the dreary period of Mulanshi reception. In Jin period there were "Jinüyan" and "Jishi" of Yuanhaowen, and Yuan Dynasty inherited the reception tradition of Tang and Song Dynasty, or to eulogize the spirit of Mulan, or to adapt works. In this period Mulanshi reception showed distinct characteristics of the times. This period appeared the painting arts and the epigraphs on the Mulan story.
