| Monastic Codes are the text which regulate virtually every aspect of life in the large public monasteries of the era. They are also a particular discipline of Chinese Buddhists. From Baizhang master of Tang dynasty, as a part of Chinese Buddhism, the Codes influence the substantive change of the temple of Chinese Buddhism, and it's authority is challenged by the people whoever are Buddhists. Is the existence of Codes reasonable? How to adjust itself to play a more important role in the temple at present? This paper tries to discuss these questions produced from the Codes on the generating transformation of Buddhism in China. Firstly, in the forward section, the author tries to find the legitimacy of the Codes from the Buddhism Vinaya, and also to find a solid foundation of the development of Codes. Then, in the following section, the author tries to reduce the text of Codes to the disciplined life-World of monk, and to observe the context of Codes which are influenced by Chinese tradition with several perspectives, using the first hand literatures. Through these two perspectives above, the author tries to construct a trinity region, from the Jieti (the essence of the Buddhist precepts) of Buddhism to the Codes of institutionism, then return to the discipline of life-World finally. |
