Abstract/Summary:
In bare word production, whether activation of grammatical information wouldaffect activation of phonological information, is one of focuses of controversy inlanguage production. Two representative models for illuminating language productionare WEAVER++, proposed by Levelt et al, and Independent Network Model, proposed by Caramazza. Both of them propose no effect of grammatical informationon phonological information. The former proposes grammatical information isactivated by semantic node in a single direction and has no feedback on phonologicalinformation; the latter proposes semantic representation separately activatesphonological, grammatical and orthographic information and these processes don'tinteract. However, the recent research of Cubelli gives results in contrast to both ofmodels. In the research, in bare word production, grammatical gender effect isobserved and grammatical information of bare word has effect on activation ofsemantic information. Cubelli proposes it is close relation between gender of Italiannouns and ending letter of these words that makes grammatical gender effect appear. Thus, the aim of this study is to explore the necessary condition for activation ofgrammatical information and the mode of activation in bare word production, moreover, to explore the effect of grammatical information on semantic information. The point we have to point out is that the character of gender of Italian nouns inCubelli's experiment is limited to such languages as Italian, Dutch and German, whileEnglish, Chinese, Japanese and other languages don't have the character of gender. Thus, in bare Chinese character production, could activation of grammaticalinformation affect processes of phonological information? This study aims to explore the mode of activation of grammatical features and itseffect on activation of phonological lexemes with picture-word paradigm. Researcherfirstly concludes the criteria of distinguishing category of words in theories ofChinese grammar and proposes a definition "Grammatical Identity" to reflect the extent of grammatical awareness for every word and two possible factors effectingactivation of syntactic features, which identify grammatical category of word, the firstis semantic information of word; the second is morphological structure of word. Thestudy includes two experiments: experiment 1 explores whether grammatical identitydepending on semantics of character would affect activation of grammaticalinformation in bare character production and found no affection of activation ofgrammatical information on phonological information. Experiment 2 exploreswhether grammatical identity depending on morphological structure of characterwould affect activation of grammatical information in bare character production andfound affection of activation of grammatical information on phonological information, that is, naming time in condition of grammatical category congruency is longer thanone in condition of grammatical category incongruency.
