However, sometimes it's'neither', sometimes it's"both"."This, makes him"the toughest one to write"in the page of Chinese literary history. He devoted his whole life to female issues: equality with men, female independence and initiative…in such a modern spirit, care and respect are given to females. Also, in his main seven novels, he cares more about female world, and makes the main characters females. The female images are made various and colorful. They appear natural,good-looking and talented, and they present free, pure, mild and naive. Different though they are, they embody the author's unique outlook of female, moral ideal, life philosophy and aesthetic pursuit. The aesthetic connotation includes diversity and complement, solemn and cultured, which obsessed the readers. Therefore, female images is the key factor to illustrate his novels and his outlook of female, marriage and his cultural mentality in the vicissitude and fusion of literature.This thesis studies the females appeared in Lin's novels, and includes four chapters, except for introduction and conclusion. It divides the female images he favored into 3 types. In chapter one, it studies such female figures as Peony and Mailing, who held the time characteristics from humanism, individualism and psychoanalysis perspectives. The continuance and change of"May Fourth Movement"revolutionary spirit, the self-identity and alienation of western modern personality, from these two aspects, this thesis analyzes the distinct female subject consciousness and the complex feature.In chapter tow, the thesis compared the female images, represented by Lai Boying and Flora, with those of"Beijing School"headed by Shen Congwen. It analyzes the life form and human nature based on love and beauty, using the social psychology and aesthetical theories. Meanwhile, the thesis put this type of female images into a social environment of coexistence and conflict of East and West cultures, to probe into the original cultural intention of the writer in the time of culture complement. The female images, represented by Mulan and Rouan, hold temporal spirit and traditional virtue in themselves, and they show the aesthetic tendency of compatibility of East and West. Moreover, they exhibit the cultural spirit of"fair and reasonable"and"golden mean"(zhongyong).These characteristics, in chapter three, will be studied by using theories of social ethics and humanism. In the end of this thesis, it applies analytic psychology and culture theory, combining with cultural criticism and prototype criticism, to analyze the cultural motives and cultural value of the multiple cultural type creation in Lin's female images.
