Taking the general discussion of 1956 as study case, this article aims to investigate the charm of The Story of Lute as classics and its value as an exemplification of the past serving the present in the contemporary cultural environment. Firstly, the article discusses the background of historic period in 1956 directly, and holds that the main reason of the appearance of the general discussion of The Story of Lute are the history being praised greatly at that time and the charming context as classics. While what leads to the advent of the general discussion are the dramatic reform which emphasizes the approval of the idealistic content and the need of the"two hundred policy". Secondly, the article argues that the general discussion in 1956 is the rediscovery about the artistic value of The Story of Lute, especially in the aspect of the implication of morality. In the process of discussion, although it does exist the background of fighting against the feudal politics and culture and the requirement of the time to regulate the aesthetic taste which aim is to carry out the fresh values, most people are unanimous in the acknowledgements of the morality and affirm its importance in ethics. The esteem to the artistic characteristics about the characterization and its structure of double line appearing alternatively and comparatively embodies the classic value with constant charm. Thirdly, the article tries to investigate the traditional moral enchantment of The Story of Lute in the view of modern culture as a well-known classical opera through the situation of its acceptance after 1980s and the acceptance to the classic values in different levels of Hunan opera and other contemporary adaptation which can be traced its origin to the general discussion.
