In the 40s of the 20th century, Shanghai being the enemy-occupied area, Zhang Ailing added numerous topics to modern Chinese literature with stories which analyzed life and human nature deeply. This paper tries to discuss Zhang's enduring artistic charm from three aspects: the cause of Zhang Ailing's lack of emotion; the tragic influence of her lack of love on her writing; the value and meaning of her lack of emotion for her writing.1. Zhang Ailing's writings are full of sense of tragedy which can never be got rid of. "Misery" or "desolation" forms the emotional keynote of her novels. This writing style has close connections with her long lack of emotional experience. What is called the lack of experience refers that the subject lacks the experience for the spiritual, physical, physiological and psychological satisfaction. The lack of experience tends to become the source of writers' artistic creation. Her miserable sufferings such as the death of her parents in her childhood, divorce etc. have a great influence on her disposition and qualities. It will also form a long lack of experience, which on a large degree determines the writer's choice of subject, modeling of characters, the keynote of emotion and the style of writing. The following four factors constitute the cause of Zhang Ailing's lack of emotional experience: (1) the lack of mother's love. (2) the lack of father's love. (3) the tragedy of love. (4) the loss of family and country.2. The life in her writing is always carrying tragedy and misery as a foil. As a sensitive and self-conscious female writer, it is her profound understanding and feeling she has for life's helplessness, misery and fright while existing. The following four aspects can display the tragedy in her writing.(1) The understanding and forming for the myth of traditional mother's love.Mother is the most important female image in individual life. In the long feudal society, mother's basic function is to give birth to children, support husbands, educate children and manage household affairs. The Chinese respect their mothers mainly for their kindness of bringing up children and their suffering of laboring hard. Thus, in the writing of all literary scholars, mother's love is always beautified in an ideal and sacred way. However, Zhang Ailing understood and formed the myth of traditional mother's love in a different way. So, there appeared a series of disappointing or environmentally-dissimilated images of mother in her writings.(2) The subverting of the authority of traditional father's power.Since the ancient time, the literature has always been flaunting the image of father as strong, brave, resolute and great. They are in the responsible position both in families and society. So their power is strengthened infinitely. But Zhang Ailing destroyed the various great glories imposed on man's body by father-powered society. In her writing she attacked the traditional culture of father-powered system and destroyed completely the usually regarded great, authoritative images of father, thus criticized and sneered at the man-powered society.(3) The dispelling of the myth of love and marriage.Love and marriage are the link to maintain a family. The good expectation to love and marriage constitutes the closest and purest emotion. From the experience of her parents and herself, Zhang exposed the ridiculousness and sordidness under the mask of love and marriage, dispelled completely the myth of love and marriage.(4) The deep exposing of brotherly affectionThe feudal human relations are hypocritical in Zhang Ailing's writing. In her grave and stern eyes, there was little tender feeling in the so-called family love. There were many examples that brothers and countrymen harm and kill each other in her writing.3. The writer's early personal experience has an important influence on the Development of her character's psychology and the formation of her writing style. Her lack of love experience made her free herself from an ideal world and made her explore perseveringly the depth of human nature and express her unique human experience. Next this essay will discuss how her lack of love affects the value and meaning of her writing.(4) the deep thinking of the true meaning of lifeZhang Ailing had understood thoroughly the human life and society. She knew that heroes were nothing but a special individual. She thought the ordinary people with some defects were common, which made the ordinary life and human nature become true. So Zhang; Ailing always dealt with her characters' tragic conflicts in a weak way. In her writing the tragic ordinary people had to retreat because of the pressure of reality. So through weakening their tragedy she tried to show clearly how hard life caused distress and helplessness to those weak persons.(5) the forming of the unique and desolate base of aesthetics. With the traditional emotion of compassionate tone, Zhang Ailingsympathized and understood deeply the common people's tragic living environment in the troubled times, In her writing, when her characters must face the life's tragic circumstances, they usually had to bear patiently, make concessions and compromise for the sake of the general interests. The dealing with the tragic conflicts in low tone is; "the writing style of uneven contrast". It forms the tragic base of desolate aesthetics with the eastern traditional cultural brand.
