The Japanese youth movie has been developed vigorously since the late 1990s. A good number of young directors have introduced a good number of youth movies to the public. The special style and ethnic connotation of these movies leave great impression to the movie area all across the world. This thesis focuses on the Japanese youth movie after 1990s from the perspectives of the reason of the prosperity, the contents and style, the special connotation, and the analysis of Japanese psychology. The introductory part briefs the development of Japanese youth movie. Chapter One examines the inevitability of Japanese youth movie, based on the reasoning of society, system, and creation. Chapter Two categorizes the post-1990s Japanese youth movie into the innocent, the depressed, the ruthless, and the encouraging; the chapter also discusses and summarizes the characteristics of each category. Chapter Three explores the artistry of Japanese youth movie in 1990s, from the perspectives of humanistic approach, employment of comparison, multiple plot development, seasonal and special aesthetics, and the combination with material elements of modern sense. Chapter Four discusses the reflection upon ethnic psychology through analyzing the Japanese young people's cultural and national psyche that are presented in the youth movies in the context of current social system.The study of Japanese youth movie is not only to demonstrate a keen respond to an emerging phenomenon, but more importantly, through examining the reason of this phenomenon, to provide some reference that deserves our attention to the Chinese movie industry.
