In the history of modern literary prose, Yu Pingbo "leisurely" sending an important one. However, the current research areas of the essay, Yu Pingbo needs further study in-depth.This paper reviews the birth and development of essay in the background of May 4 Movement, the changes of the concept of essay, the stylistic features of essay, and Yu Pingbo the writer and his essay writing.The third chapter is the core of the thesis, which illustrates the aesthetic features of Yu Pingbo's essays. The illustration is in two ways. The first is in the theme. The central ideas in Yu Pingbo's essays are Taoist philosophy and Chan spirit, which is shown in the wisdom by which the secret meaning of life is got under the influence of the conception of "instanf', in the realization that people should cultivate themselves in the mortal world under the guidance of "physical charm is nothing", and in the relief from the impermanence of life by embracing the Tao with the whole soul. The second is in the artistic style. In his essays Yu Pingbo uses "dream analysis", "fantasies", "transient and obscure images", which correspond to the central ideas of his essays, to express the wandering of human soul and the impermanent state of human life. He uses the means of artistic expression, such as "simplifying the intense distress" and "describing a cold heart as a warm one", to dispel the intense distress and the penetrative loneliness. That shows the aesthetic feature of essay as literary art and the great master's technique and wisdom to explain profound ideas in a plain style.Meanwhile,the points out the classical tinge of Yu Pingbo, who considers the traditional culture as his spiritual home, and his unconventional and unrestrained manner based on being free from worldly care and pouring out his heart, by comparing Yu Pingbo's essays with those of his contemporary writers Zhou Zuoren, Zhu Ziqing, Lin Yutang and Liang Shiqiu. Finally, the historical resources of Yu Pingbo's essays in time background, aesthetic sentiment and unrestrained behavior; it also analyzes the relationship between his essay writing and late Ming essays.
