Primarily using the production of modality study on Domestic and Foreign, and applying some basic concepts and theories of Cognitive Linguistics, this paper analyzes the Potential Verb-Complement of "V buliao (ä¸äº†)" from syntactic and Semantic aspects,and discusses the influence of verbal process upon the meanings of "V buliao(ä¸äº†)", semantic orientation of"liao(了)"in the structure of "V buliao (ä¸äº†)" and the expression mechanism of epistemic meaning.This paper consists of four chapters.Chapter One is the Introduction. This chapter is a major statement of the purpose, meaning, scope and methods of earlier research.Chapter Two has a syntactic analysis of "V buliao (ä¸äº†)" and analyzes the restriction on "V buliao (ä¸äº†)" which is used as a syntactic component, and this chapter classifies the verbs which can enter this structure from a structural perspective of verbal process. It discusses the effect of expressing the meaning from different kinds of verbs to the structure of "V buliao (ä¸äº†)".Chapter Three has the semantic analysis of "V buliao (ä¸äº†)". The chapter conducts the semantic analysis of "V buliao (ä¸äº†)". It studies the semantic orientation of "liao (了)" in the structure of "V buliao (ä¸äº†)", the substitution relation of "V buliao2(ä¸äº†)" and "V bu (ä¸)C", and classifies the "V bu (ä¸)C" again. At the same time, this chapter distinguishes self-expression epistemic meaning of "V buliao2 (ä¸äº†)" from the situation of the structure which expresses epistemic meaning in the context. It analyzes the differences of expressing the meaning.Chapter Four analyzes the evolution and pragmatic features of "V buliao (ä¸äº†)". The chapter studies the evolution of "V buliao (ä¸äº†)" from diachronic perspective and mainly analyzes the production of the structure, the process of evolution and the cause of structural evolution. Also the chapter compares "V buliao2 (ä¸äº†)" with "can't V" and studies the differences of the two structures in the aspect of pragmatics.Conclusion. We summarize the major points of the paper. |
