Ding Foyan, a renowned paleographist, completed the works Shuowen Guzhou Bu Bu in the 1920s. This thesis intends to do a comprehensive and in-depth research on the works. This thesis falls into two major parts. Part One offers a comprehensive review. In this part we introduce Ding's life story and academic achievements. The focus of this part is on the contribution and deficiency of Shuowen Guzhou Bu Bu as well as the significance of the works in the history of paleography. Part Two deals with the revision. We try to revise some of the paleographic characters in the 14 volumes. First, we summarize and present the valuable explanation in Shuowen Guzhou Bu Bu; secondly some of the incorrect explanations are revised; thirdly our try to illustrate our explanations upon those controversial opinions in the Shuowen Guzhou Bu Bu. This thesis intends to supply valuable arguments for the objective criticism of Ding and his works as well as the study of the paleography history.
