Xin Ding Shuowen Bushou Lidu is a book of philologist Rao Jiong, who lived in the end of the Qing and the early years of the Republic of China.Rao’s"Liu Shu" concept is the outline of the book and he exploited "Liu Shu"to explain Shuowen Bushou characters, carefully analyzed radical characters and classified them. The book has some value in the study of radical characters and "Liu Shu" theory. The first chapter introduces Rao Jiong and overviews his book. The first section introduces his book’s general research. This part is mainly about research significance and research status on Rao Jiong and his book. The second section is about research of the author Rao Jiong’s life. The third section summarizes Rao’s works and different editions. The fourth section section introduces the purpose of Rao Jiong compiled the book. The fifth section introduces the book’s structure, including arrange structure and explanation structure. The sixth section counts the book’s closed characters. The second chapter is about research of "Liu Shu". This is the main part of the paper, mainly for Rao’s Liu Shu theory analysis and explanation and concentrated Rao’s Liu Shu concept. This chapter has six sections. Section I, pictograph. Rao considered, pictograph, such as freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese painting, using graphics to record things.Rao took a new viewpoint to classify pictographic characters, based on the perspective of creating characters. Depending on different perspectives, then the pictograph classification is different. Rao divided pictograph characters into four categories:side pictograph, frontal pictograph, plane pictograph and compositive pictograph. Section Ⅱ, self-explanatory. Rao considered, self-explanatory,such as the deaf communicate with common people, they didn’t speak, while they communicate through gestures. Rao divided self-explanatory characters into eight categories, namely:Tishi, Xuxing, Wuxiang, Shengxing, Zengxing, Diexing, Bianxing, Weizhi.Section Ⅲ, understand. Rao thought "understand" as riddle."understand" is divided into three classes, such as: Pikuang, Zhizhi, Cuowen.Section IV, pictophonetic. Rao thought character pattern was determined by pronunciation, while pronunciation was determined by character meaning. He put forward pictophonetic characters were mainly formed by pronunciation, character pattern was auxiliary.Rao divided pictophonetic characters into two categories:Sheng yu Yihe and Sheng yu Yiyi.Section V, mutually explanatory. The essence of Rao’s mutually explanatory characters theory is that due to the original character can’t summarize in terms of form, sound and meaning,on the basis of the original character, adding side pattern, pictophonetic or stroke to create new character. He divided "mutually explanatory" into eight classes, they were:Yihui Jiaxing, Yihui Jiasheng, Bieyi Jiaxing, Bieyi Jiasheng, Tiewen Tongyi, Fuzhuan Jiaxing, Fuzhuan Jiasheng.Section VI, phonetic loan. Rao thought the phonetic loan characters created when people were writing they forgot the character’s right writing or some other reasons. There are four categories of phonetic loan characters in his book:Xing, Yi, Sheng, Yinshen. The achievement and deficiency of the book is summarized in Part three. In Shuo Wen Jie Zi, the framework is arranged in radical, in Rao’s book is arranged in "Liu Shu".To some degree, his "Liu Shu" concept is justified and is useful to research "Wenzi Ziru" and "Wenzi Chongwen".However, this book has some defects, for example,Rao respects blindly for Xushen’s theory. It is burdensome to use "Liu Shu"for researching characters. Besides, some viewpoints in "Liu Shu" are not very reasonable. Conclusion:This paper summarizes the research on Xin Ding Shuo Wen Bu Shou Li Du.
