Luo Zhongrong is a characteristic composer of great achievement in China. His musical composition began as early as 1930s and spanned over more than a half century compassing a variety of genres such as songs, chorus, chamber music, orchestra and movie music. He had produced more than eighty works. He had over the years developed an individual feature of Chinese orientation, technique orientation and music orientation as particularly embodied in Faint Fragrance---- work for Zheng and orchestra, in which the traditional Chinese musical idioms are integrated with modern Western music techniques. Basing on constant exploration and innovation, he devised a highly systematic, logical and structural pitch organization, i.e. reciprocal pentatonic grouping of twelve notes and combinatorial pentatonic grouping of twelve notes. This thesis is based on the study of Faint Fragrance. Through detailed analysis of pitch organization, musical form structure, modern harmony, polyphony, instrumentation and others, the author hereby analyzes the innovative drive and aesthetic implication as shown in Mr. Luo's modern music creation and therefore points out how he combined the traditional Chinese music style with modern twelve tone technique, thus forming his unique style.Basing on the reciprocal pentatonic twelve tone grouping in different parts of this article, the author makes a further analysis of how Luo Zhongrong constructed his works with the expression of texture. In his works, through displacing the traditional chord with the twelve tone grouping, combination of the twelve tone grouping with polyphonic thinking and exploitation of innovative instrumentation, the distinguishing and unique color and timber bloc is embodied.
