Susan Sontag is a famous American critic and writer. In 1966, she made its debut on the literary scene when she published Against Interpretation. In this book she criticized the current critical style, and put forward the concept of "against interpretation", hoping to recreate the sensibility of the works, and encouraged the readers to focus on the beauty of artistic forms of the works. The Benefactor and Death Kit, two early novels by Susan Sontag, are the footnotes of her theory. Susan Sontag had much influenced by the existentialist Sartre.This paper will focus on the analysis of the forming, developping of this theory, then analyze the practice in the novels. The highlight of the study is the twoconcepts-dream and death. Through the ideas of existentialism, I will analyze thereason,way of using these two concepts as carries, and the effects they have got. Meanwhile, the paper will talk about the limitations of this theory, in the hope of mastering the development of the American post-modern trains of art. |
