In recent years, the study of Amy Tan has been grown up fastly. As a Chinese American female writer, Amy Tan creates her works in terms of her own family history. She mainly takes her mother as an example, which writes the difficulty of being a woman and the adaptability between two kinds of different cultures. There are four kinds of books which are related to Chinese background, The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God's Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, and The Bonesetter's Daughter. Although these are different books, mother is the main roles in them. Mothers' behavior deeply influence their daughters' thoughts not only about the destiny of woman but also the culture of China. In Amy Tan's books, women achieve the identity of mother for two patterns: normal mother, whose natural identity and social identity shows no difference; abnormal mother, which is opposite to the fomer pattern. No matter what kind of mothers, they implement the role of mother while eagering to realize their own value, but patriarchal culture limits the world of woman. Therefore, these mothers have two-faces of characteristics towards patriarchy: they not only defend the patriarchy, but also subvert it. This dissertation uses the theory of feminism to discuss woman's destiny through the image of mother. Mothers apply the writing and non-rational thinking to communicate with daughters. Through this method, we can comprehend that writing and non-rational thinking is just the power of subverting the patriarchy in some degree. Meanwhile, mothers, who stand the cross of Chinese culture and American culture, make the writer have to think the problem of how to mix the two different cultures together. Mothers are related to Chinese history, daughters who are born in American can find the root their own history and culture only through mothers. The author portrays the image of mothers with her own Chinese complex in her bone. The attitude towards mothers means the thought about China. Therefore, the works not only pay attention to the destiny of woman, but also concern on the harmonious existence between diversified cultures. In the novel, Amy Tan makes use of the mother-daughter relationship to describe her idealism prospect about cultural intergrowth. The thesis chooses the image of mother to discuss her gender feature and the cultural peculiarity. Thus, we can understand author's attitude toward different culture.
