Xu Feng'en is a representative classical Chinese novelist after Pu Songling. His collection of short stories Lisheng (里乘) can be called an outstanding works during the classical novels of late Qing Dynasty, which is worth to be researched. The first chapter is the author study which inspects Xu Feng'en's family, life, excursions and preserved works. Xu Feng'en's family history study is concerned first, and then is his life research. Xu Feng'en once again participated in the imperial examination, or even attempted to gain official military exploit, but without success. All through his life, he worked for officials .So he recognized lots of officials, mubin, Buddhists and so on. Part of this chapter is about the research of their contacts. Xu Feng'en wrote a lot of works, but most are in dispersion. His preserved works are also covered briefly in this chapter. The II, III, IV chapters are Lisheng research. In the absence of hope to be an official, Xu Feng'en began his writing. Although he failed to be an official, he did not simply vent his grievances in his works. The successions of the traditional Confucian virtue of theatrical concept, the ideological indoctrination salvation through his creative ways are also found. Lisheng clearly expresses the theme—"Punishing the evil and promoting the good" and from both positive and negative perspectives, further demonstrates this theme. The components of Lisheng are explored through the angles of characters from the horizon, other works by the impact of homology and homology-flow. The theme and artistic features are also analyzed. Finally, based on the above study, it comes to a comparatively objective evaluation on Xu Feng'en and a confirmation of his due status in literary history.
