Yu Hua, one considerably noticeable writer in this new literature epoch of China, became one of the Pioneer Writers in 1980s by right of a maiden work—Went Over from Home when 18 Years Old. Relies on his unique writing style, sensitive feeling, and totally different writing method from the traditional narratives, he focuses on the cycle plot narrative, single but native character drawing, and flat even a little bland words. In this way, he shows his own attitude to life and his own understanding of the reality. Just as he himself said, "All my efforts are for the reality". The reality from Yu Hua's writing, is endless fraud, violence, killing, absurd, and evil of human nature, which represents the theme of Yu Hua's novels in 1980s-tribulation.However, Yu Hua is a gradually changing- style writer who grows more mature in writing. He also said, "as a writer, I myself also want to go ahead subjectively".The novel called Cries in the Drizzle in 1991 is just a transition, after which, the novels To Live in 1992, Chronicle of a Blood Merchant in 1995, and Brothers in 2006 fully show his writing manner is really formed. Accordingly, his former theme of Tribulation in 1980s also possesses new meaning, which turning violence and death into warmth and sorrow. It makes researching the theme of Yu Hua's novels meaningful. This thesis aims at the theme of Yu Hua's novels via three sections: the first section analyses the cause of Yu Hua's novels' theme: tribulation from western culture, his hometown specialty, his childhood, and the totential memory of Institutional Revolution,; the second section focuses on his enquiry of life and survival through violence and death, warmth and sorrow, which shows his theme of tribulation and its significance; the third section discoers the deep implication of Yuhua's novels theme from setting up the real mentality, suppassing the prior writings and exploring the meaning of life.
