The essay attempts to study the sans serif type which is widely used now from an artistic perspective of typeface designing by incorporating the research materials in the field of typeface designing. This exploration begins with an analysis of the historical development of typeface designing and the features of the typefaces, tracing back to the influence of the social and cultural revolution in the 19th century on the development of sans serif as well as the 20th century when sans serif became popular and later became the major language for visual communication. The exploration goes on further to probe into the causes and bases for the change in the style of typefaces and to treat the relationship between typefaces and visual communication and social development based on case study of various modern designs of sans serif. Therefore, the overall intention of this essay is to inspire our understanding and extend our knowledge on the theory of typography designing. However, it is an initial scratch on the development of sans serif designing while the discussion on the rule of typeface designing and its cultural significance in modern information communication remains a topic worthy of long-term study. It is the author's sincere wish that this essay can provide some reference for similar studies.
