Meaning Exegetical Method For "Jing Yi Shu Wen"

Jing Yi Shu Wen is a gather of critical interpretation to Chinese classic ancient texts and its author is Wang Yinzhi. It is an outstanding linguistic work and has gotten a great achievement in word-meaning explanations. Its influnce is very profound.There are thirty-two volumes in Jing Yi Shu Wen, of which twenty-six volumes are critical interpretation of word-meaning, involing many methods of word-meaning explanations. The author took seven hundred and fifty-eight entries in Mao Shi, Da Dai Li Ji, Chun Qiu Zuo Zhuan, and Guo Yu as the raw research materials, then carried on a exhausting-like analysis to them, recorded all the entries chosen in cards and classified them carefully. So the author has obtained the first materials. In this foundation, the author tried to show a complete picture of exegesis methods of wording-meaning in Jing Yi Shu Wen by refering to the treatise written by senior schoolars and connecting modern linguistics and other correlative subjects.The author thought that exegeses of word-meaning in Jing Yi Shu Wen had two levels.One was the process to seek or prove what the word-meaning was, the other was to interpret the final results of seeking or proving. Corresponded with this, the exegesis methods used in Jing Yi Shu Wen could be divided into two sorts. One was the methods to seek or prove word-meaning ,the other was the methods of interpreting the word-meaning. In this paper, the author has made a detailed analysis to these two sorts of methods. Its main contents are as follows.Foreword: In this part, the author made a brief introduction about the research object—Jing Yi Shu Wen and its author's situation, the research direction, the research technique, the research history of related topics,and the present research situation.Part I: In this part, the author generalized and analysed all the exegesis methods of word-meaning used in Jing Yi Shu Wen.It's the most inportant part in this article.Altogether, the author generalized and analysed twelve methods of seeking or proving word-meaning.They are to analyse the figure of Chinese characters, to survey the sound and rhyme of words, to expand other meanings from the original meaning of the word, to anlyse the context, the rhetoric,and the grammar, to inspect the sentences with a little difference in word using, whose meaning was the same, to collect and analyse some examples that used the same word,to quote ancient's explanation, to refer to history materials, to analyse the dialect and proverd, and to use statistical method. The author also generalized and analysed two kinds of methods of word-meaning interpretation-to interpret the wordmeaning in a direct way and to interpret the word-meaning in a indirect way.The author has made a detailed classification and analysis to the function and representable form of every method.Part II: In this part, the author concluded and analysed the achievement and the deficiency in the exegesis method of word-meaning in Jing Yi Shu Wen. About the achievement,the author mainly enumerated "Sought the word-meaning according to the sound clue"and "Used kinds of method together to seek or prove word-meaning". About the deficiency, the author briefly analyzed"Pointed the the characters borrowed wrongly", "Viewpoints were contradictory occasionally", and "Terminology used confusedly occasionally". Although white jade has a little flaw, the flaw doesn't cover the fine jade. Jing Yi Shu Wen is a great exegesis work indeed.Ending: In this Part, the author summarized the whole article and pointed out the problems to solve,the standpoints proved not fully enough and the questions needed to be discussed more deeply.
