In this thesis the construction semantics of ba sentence is explained with the source-path-goal schema. And the semantic and pragmatic differences between ba sentence and other sentences are explained on the basis of the source-path-goal schema.In the first part of this thesis, ba sentences are divided into 14 types according to its syntactic structure which are connected to 3 schematic structures: source-path-goal schema of space (including physical space and mental space), schema of time and schema of state. The thesis research the pragmatic function of ba sentence in the second part. Ba sentence has four pragmatic functions: verb and compliment are salience as they become information focus in ba sentence; object of ba hints the reference relation between object and above text; ba stresses the cause and effect relation in the text; ba sentence describes the changing process in a dynamic way. In the last part, the thesis explains the pragmatic functions through source-path-goal schema and concludes the syntactic, semantic and textual condition of using ba sentence.The ba sentence has always been one of the most difficult grammars in Chinese. The author hopes the thesis may make a little contribution to ba sentence teaching.
