The stylistic shift in the 20th century in Chinese modern comedy has not only ended the era of classical comedy, but also ushered in the era of modern comedy. Imported from the Occidental, Chinese comedy was greatly influenced by the foreign counterparts. At the same time, Chinese modern comedy has absorbed the essence of traditional Chinese culture as well as traditional Chinese opera, giving birth to a brand new lit style, which caters to our national habit of appreciation.Playwrights of modern Chinese comedy have casted off the self-closed cultural mood. They write in a completely new and self-conscious modern spirit. Their works have not only presented before us the ways of the world, and the customs and habits of the society, but also their close attention to politics, and introspection and criticism of our history and traditional culture.In the 20s, last century, the element of "people" firstly came into existence in Chinese modern comedy. In these comedies, the playwrights have fully affirmed the values and importance of people, manifesting the young generation' s desire for the liberation of individuality, marital freedom and independence of character. In the 30s, those playwrights have, through their works, expressed normal human desires, exploring human life from the angle of love and normal human feelings. In the 40s, the comedies concerning the ways of the world, and customs and habits of the society pierced through love, marriage, and family, presenting before us the warmth and coldness of the society, depending on whether you are successful, and social snobbery in the money-corrupted society.
