YuPian written by Gu Yewang in Southern Dynasty is not only the first regular script dictionary in our country but also an important medieval Chinese dictionary. After the revision in Liang and Tang Dynasty and large-scale official revision in Song Dynasty YuPian has retained its popularity till today. Original YuPian and Song edition revised by the people in Song Dynasty are different manifestations of YuPian in different periods. These two can be traced to the same origin in compiling styles and explanation of words. This paper focuses on explanation of words in original and Song editions, and systematically compares the explanation laws, explanation characteristics and the differences of explaination with the view of exegetics and lexicography. Moreover, referring to the origin YuPian, this paper checks the exegetic mistakes in Song edition. we introduce the general condition of research at present and the different editions of YuPian in foreword. It is classified to four categories:Chapter1.Introduce the compling background and the changes of YuPian with the passage of time.Chpter2.This chapter compares the original edition with Song edition in explanation laws; sorts out the continuation and development of YuPian in the respect of explanation rules; and also talks about the evolution of compiling ways in YuPian; then reveals the characteristics of the two editions in the aspects of the amount of the items, Yewang's notes, the content of interpretation and illustrative sentences.Chapter3. We concentrate on the differences of explanation of words between the two editions; study what work has been done about the revision of YuPian by later generations, and through the analysis and comparison of explanation of words that two editions include, we initially sum up eight methods that later generations used in revision: add and delete words;change and invert words; merge and divide annotation; pick up key words and summarize information. It is thought that comparing with original edition, Song edition has some merits in practicability, cutting the meanings, reflecting condition of medieval Chinese and so on, but there are also some demerits, such as reappearance of items and casual explanation.Chapter 4. We mainly make use of original edition to check the explanation in Song edition. Combining examples we show some problems in the respects of merging meanings, cutting explanation words and picking up key words; and all of these can help further to rearrange and use this dictionary, the author hope so.
