The traditional culture has an extensive positive effect on the relationships between China, Japan and South Korea. It is of great significance to look back and do some research on such effects, in order to promote the development of the friendships. The diplomacy between China and South Korea used to be a situation of political isolation, military confrontation and economic blockade. However, since the end of the Cold War, traditional culture has being such an impulsive energy and cultural background to end the era of deadlock. Though the establishment of diplomacy between the two sides was delayed, it has kept the momentum in the development in such an unequalled and unprecedented speed. The traditional culture contributes much to the development of diplomacy, among which the Chinese characters play an important role. Calligraphy, which represents the essence of Chinese characters, promotes the contemporary culture exchange between China, Japan and South Korea. Therefore, it is really a pressing task for us to do some research on the history of calligraphy. The communication between the three countries has been more frequently in recent years, however, our traditional knowledge of calligraphy is limited to Japanese handwriting. We are only familiar with a few calligraphers and their works in South Korea. Nowadays, the "South Korea Fashion" has great influence worldwide (for wonderful South Korea TV plays), which requires us to do an overall research on calligraphy in South Korea as well.My thesis below introduces, discusses and also compares calligraphy in the three countries, on the basis of which, I make predictions on the future of calligraphy. I also refer to comparative method and educational theories to demonstrate the history, current situation and future trend of calligraphy. The comparative research between the three countries on calligraphic history, aesthetic appreciation, calligraphic composition, education and its future trend will obviously help us have a deep view of the cultural arts in China, Japan and South Korea. It also offers a plateau to develop Chinese calligraphy innovatively and creatively as advocated.
