Mr. Yan Wenliang is an important figure in the history of Chinese early oil painting.Born in a artist oriented family, Mr. Yan Wenliang showed his painting talent when he was young. When he was eighteen years old, he began to make experience with various painting pigments. He won great status in the history of Chinese painting like western painter Jan Van Eyck. He has found a fine art school in 1922, since then, he has trained lots of oil painting talents. He died in 1988, when he was 96 years old. Mr. Yan Wenliang is a really master with great reputation and knowledge in history.This paper focuses on his works on different times, and classifies his painting works into two parts: the realism and expressionism according to his works genre in different periods. Especially, in his representation realism, this paper classified his works into three different periods.This paper analyze reasons of the transition of Mr. Yan Wenliang's genre in the following aspects: the influence of the new culture movement (realism and impressionism) ; the influence of ethnical style, and other factors ( painting market, social politics, his personal character etc.).Finally, this paper sums up his achievements and influence. Great contributions about his efforts to introducing western oil painting to china are included in this part., and the influence to the second and the third generations. This paper also analyses his contributions on the following aspects like perspective, colors and skills of oil painting. But the transition of his artistic style and the exploration in oil painting offers great reference to Chinese artistic workers.
