So the. following article will make a thorough study of its origin and development from the diachronic view by means of combining exhaustive statistics and sample investigation. The paper is divided into three parts on the whole :Part one will inquire into the origin of the handing verb Gei . The writer draws a conclusion by probing into and analyzing the literature of past dynasties that the handing verb Gei existed as early as pre-Qin period, but it seldom occurred and was limited in uses to some degree before Qing Dynasty . In addition we inferred boldly and reasonably into the phonetic changing of Gei.Part two points out that the course of Gei replacing Yu is in fact the fast development of the use of Gei through reviewing the replacement course. In the replacement, the powerful analogical function of Yu motivated the handing verb Gei to spring over the long course of grammaticalization to emerge a series of empty items.Part three mainly inquires into the new uses after the evolvement such as the disposal meaning Gei and auxiliary word Gei.
