LuXun and Wang Xiaobo , who both lived in the 20th century, but belonged todifferent cultural epoch , are two "night watchmen" for Chinese culture and areviewed as two beautiful scenes in the Chinese modern literature history.Reflecting on their life journeys, which were actually not very long, we can findthey bear a great many overwhelming similarities, in terms of ideas and consciousness, literary concept and personal experience, for instance: mishaps during the childhood, study experience overseas, their abandonment of science for liberal arts and even theirpremature deaths. The two literary figures belonged to different cultural environments;one was the backbone of new-culture movement at the dawning period of this century,a pace-maker of new literature, the other, romance knight of liberalism at the end ofthe 20th century. However, they explored the same theme in their respective literaryworld, namely, the deep concern for the living conditions of their fellow Chinese, therebellion against oppression and servitude and the longing and pursuit for freedom ofindividual life. The characteristics are reflected in their fiction and essays in differentways and techniques, shining in the modern and contemporary literary world of the20th century. The thesis consists of three parts. Chapter one: the spiritual essence of therebellion against servitude. In the beginning of the 20th century, LuXun's "shout" ofthe May4 New Culture Movement for the enlightening of humanism and discoveryand Wang Xiaobo's refusal to keep silent for the fury and hypercritic " Utopian Myth" in different social and historical environment. LuXun and Wang Xiaobo are bothagainst superstition, criticized hypercritic morality-centered ideology , dissipated"Utopian" complex, and defended individual rights and freedom ,and advocatedrational liberalism. They rebelled and struggled against ubiquitous and variousspiritual servitude and the physical servitude in their way. LuXun's way is his coldstyle of desperate but never hesitant determination, while Wang's way is the brilliantand deep humor.Chapter two: the pioneering and extending of the enlightening genre. The worksof the two writers are great masterpiece in the history of Chinese modern literature, just to name some The Diary of A Mad man , and The Crying by LuXun , and WangXiaobo's trilogy , The Gold Age, The Silver Age, and The Bronze Age. Though writtenin different techniques and styles, their works are concerned about the relationshipbetween individuals and groups, and the degree of freedom of individuals .Theirworks of both writers explore the depth of humanity and aesthetic perception .It issecure to claim that LuXun is the pioneer and Wang Xiaobo is his successor in thewriting of enlightening tradition of literature.Chapter three : the seeking for liberal thought. Liberalism is the theory on whichboth LuXun and Wang Xiaobo created their works. LuXun was concerned about theliberty of individuals and thought, the emancipation of individuals. Wang Xiaobo, who once drunk deeply from the western thought of rationality , advocates "passive"liberalism, pursing a life full of fine taste and intellectual pleasure. The eventual aimof his spirit is freedom, democracy and equality. What's more important, he discoversthe Hippocratic "active" liberalism that exists in real life and exposes it, and criticizesit ruthlessly in his fiction and essays.
