Being the major trait and the core of traditional Chinese ethics, filial piety has long been enjoying priority and regiment to the other merits in Chinese political and cultural fields.The peculiar agriculture-centered economy, patriarchal clan system and religion in China integrate together to nurture the birth of the notion, which develops over thousands of years from a religious ethics to a household norm, and finally a political criterion. The traditional filial piety penetrates the society extensively to exercises its influence. Although it weakened to some extent under the effect of economic and political changes as well as cultural impact, itsimbedded rationality can not be neglected in our ethical construction today.The thesis firstly introduces the evolution of traditional filial piety, analyzing its contents and traits to reveal its nature of being the foundation stone of Chinese ethics. Then it probes into the modern values and possible measures to its reestablishment on the new conditions, paving the theoretical way for a harmonious society and socialist civilization.Comparisons, literature analyses, inductions and logical analyses, etc. are incorporated in the discussion, with a focus on the evolvement and influence of filial piety to put forward the rationality and possibility of reestablishment in the modern society. The discussion takes a comparatively new perspective with concrete demonstrations.
