The thesis explores the different use of indefinite quantifiers "dian"and "xie"and their reasons by making a comparative research about them. The main body includes three parts. The first part makes a comparative study on nominal quantifiers "dian"and "xie". This part mainly explores the different use of "dian"and "xie". The "dian"and "xie"both are the adjunct of nouns, but there are some differences. The language objects which they modify are different. The objects which the "dian"modifies are boundless nouns and abstract nouns. The ones the "xie"modifies are bound nouns, boundless nouns and abstract nouns. The quantity that the "xie"denotes is more than that of the "dian". When they denote the specified quantity, what the "dian"denotes is the total quantity, however, the one the "xie"denotes is the part quantity. In addition to, they can collocate with the specific words differently, for example, the "xie"can collocate with the "mou(某)",but the "dian"cannot. The second part makes a comparative study on the verb quantifiers "dian"and "xie"which can modify the directional word, the verb and the adjective. This part mainly explores the same use of the "dian"and "xie". The "dian"and "xie"require of the subclass of the directional word, the one of the verb and the one of the adjective, which is tied up with the semantic feature of them. In addition to, we investigate the situation which the "dian"and "xie"are used in the sentences with the directional word, the verb and the adjective. The three part makes a comparative study on the pragmatic functions of the "dian"and "xie". The "dian"tends to be used in the oral language, and the "xie"tends to be used in the written language. The "dian"can make the sentence completed and the "xie"cannot. The "dian"can be used in the negative sentences, so it can emphasize the mood of the sentences. The "xie"cannot be used in the negative sentences. The innovation of the thesis lies in the exploration into the subclass of the directional word, the verb and the adjective and their semantic feature by making a comparative study on the "dian"and "xie". The thesis specifies the fact that there must be a semantic agreement between the co-occurrence constituents and proves the determination and importance of the semantic in the grammatical research.
