| Since the 1960's, the rapid development of text linguistics has greatly enriched the theories of translation. The unit of translation has been extended from the words and sentence to the sentence groups and text. The criterion of translation has been changed from preserving the completely faithfulness and verbal beauty to achieving cohesive and coherent equivalence between the source text and the target text from the communicative perspective.According to Halliday and Hasan's theory, cohesion is one of the linguistic features of text and it, together with coherence in discourse, is the core of the study of text linguistics. So in the process of translation, we have to study what cohesive and coherent devices are available in the source language and the target language, and what differences there are between them in order to achieve the proper transference. Moreover, translation is a cross-culture activity. Different cultural background creates different cultural context. So the achievement of cohesive and coherence equivalence in text translation by compensating for culture background is of great importance. However, the existing papers and works on text analysis and translation have always respectively emphasized on the features of cohesion and coherence in Chinese and English. Almost nobody has clearly generalized the differences of cohesion and coherence between Chinese and English by analyzing the translating process. So this thesis mainly focuses on the generalization of differences in cohesion, coherence, and cultural context between English and Chinese in the process of translation. And it also discusses the proper way of transference in order to achieve the purpose of cross-cultural communication. |
