In the late Ming dynasty, the calligraphers changed the small characters written by using hand strength in the Jin dynasty and the Tang dynasty to large characters written by using elbow and wrist strength in calligraphy. During this process, because of the complete changes in using the Chinese writing brush, there are all sorts of essential differences between the calligraphy in the Ming dynasty and the traditional calligraphy in the Jin dynasty and the Tang dynasty. Therefore, this thesis inquires into the transform of the writing technique used by the calligraphers, which caused the concrete changes in calligraphy in the late Ming dynasty. This thesis starts with the development of writing technique in calligraphy in the course of history. Firstly, it discusses the calligraphers'view of using the Chinese writing brush in calligraphy in the Jin dynasty and the Tang dynasty. At the same time, it explains the reason of the appearance of writing by using elbow and wrist strength after the Song dynasty. Then it reveals that writing by using elbow and wrist strength was the major way used by calligraphers in writing large characters in the late Ming dynasty. Secondly, it analyses the relations between writing technique and writing materials in calligraphy. It also investigates the changes of the writing materials in calligraphy in the late Ming dynasty. Finally, according to some pictures, it studies the characteristics of writing by using hand strength and writing by using elbow and wrist strength, which influenced the calligraphy in each dynasty. This thesis is the beginning research on the transform of the writing technique used by the calligraphers in the late Ming dynasty.
